In
remembrance of the 40th
Anniversary of the slaying of renowned civil rights
leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. the Media Fellowship House will
be re-enacting a Freedom March from the Media Fellowship House to
the site of this year’s celebration, The First United Methodist
Church of Media , on Sunday, January 20th.
“The community is
welcome to join in the “march” which will begin at 1:45 p.m.,” said
Robin Otto, President of the Board of the MFH. “The original march
spanned 6 days in March of 1965 and extended 54 miles from Selma to
the Alabama State Capital in Montgomery where members, lead by Dr.
King, protested the state’s discriminatory voter registration
policies. Our march pays tribute to those who took part in this
monumental movement which roused the nation and hastened the passage
of the “Voting Rights Law.”
At
2:30, the celebration begins with opening comments by Congressman
Joseph Sestak and welcoming remarks by Media Mayor Bob McMahon. The
program will include: Dr. Cecilia Evans, Chairperson of the event
and MFH Board member who will give an overview of the re-enacted
march and its significance; Dr. Joan Duvall Flynn, who will speak on
the ongoing struggle for social justice; a re-enactment by the
Hedgerow Theatre Company of the Tower Restaurant meeting between
Dorothy James and Marie Whitaker that spawned the founding of the
9edia Fellowship House; and artist and advertising agency owner
George Rothacker who will provide a tribute to MFH founder Dorothy
James.
“We’re extremely pleased to have music provided by the Second
41Baptist Church Youth Choir, “ continued Ms. Otto,” as well as
songs presented a cappella by John Alston, founder of the Chester
Children’s Chorus, and a trumpet solo of “We Shall Overcome” by
Jacob Manny.”
All
are welcome to attend with a reception following hosted by the Media
Area NAACP
