The 16th Annual
Dr. Martin Luther King

|
| The 16th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Birthday Celebration, which was held on Sunday, January 16, 2005 at The First United Methodist Church of Media, was another resounding success. More than 200 people came out to celebrate the life and works of one of America’s greatest champions of individual freedom and human dignity. The recurring theme of this year’s event was youth. Participants in the celebration agreed that the energy of the civil rights struggles of the 1960s came from the youth of the day and that it is their responsibility to make sure that the world doesn’t forget those struggles. Marjorie Moat, of the Media Area NAACP concurred by saying, “If we don’t share our history, it will be lost.” The featured speaker for the event was Dr. Donald Clark, who is the current President of The Willow Grove NAACP and a retired educator with over 40 years of service to the young. Dr. Clark gave a dynamic speech where he addressed the importance of honoring Dr. King, but more importantly never forgetting his message, “We don’t do justice to Dr. King if we honor the man, but forget his message.” |

| The fun filled day continued as the little voices in The Media Youth Choir sang powerfully to the audience while the exceptional music of The Gospel Disciples had everyone dancing in the aisles. A particularly moving component of this year’s event was when students from area schools stood up in front of everyone and read excerpts from the speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. What better way for our youth to remember the message of Dr. King, than to read his electrifying words. |

| Our long standing tradition continued this year as
the community came together to remember an American icon. A very
special thanks to the planning committee for the hard work that went
into organizing this event…to the Media Area NAACP’s Freedom Fund
for providing refreshments in the basement afterwards…and to all of
the participants for making the 16th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. Birthday Celebration one of the best ever.
