On Tuesday, April 26, 2005, Media Fellowship House held its
2005 Annual Meeting. One of the primary pieces of business at this year’s
meeting was the membership’s vote on four new people to serve on our Board of
Directors. These new board members come with an exciting array of experience and
will most certainly add tremendous value to Media Fellowship House. They each
have had an enormous amount of influence on the youth in our society as well as
the community as a whole. Two of the new candidates have spent years as
educators shaping the minds of our youth. Dr. Joan Duvall-Flynn, who is the
current President of the Media Area NAACP, and Sharon E. Parker, Superintendent
of The Wallingford-Swarthmore School District, have dedicated themselves to
teaching our children and preparing them for the world that lies before them.
Reverend Dr. David A. Cooling, our third candidate, is a retired minister from
New Jersey and is currently working on The Chester Youth Project at Pendle Hill.
This project attempts to reach at risk children living in Chester by offering an
after school and evening program that gives a “sense of hope and inspiration for
the future, and basic life skills to help them build positive and rewarding
lives.” Marla Luzzi, our fourth candidate, is the Director of Institutional
Advancement and Community Relations at The Pennsylvania Institute of Technology.
Marla is a very active member of our community who serves on the Board of
Directors of The Rotary Club of Media as well as the Delaware County Press Club.
Marla, too, has helped to forge a positive future for our youth in her current
role at PIT and as the former Executive Director of CASA/Youth Advocates. We are
excited that these individuals have agreed to serve on Media Fellowship House’s
Board and are anxious to work with them in achieving our mission of service to
the community.

Bill and Lorraine Gross, recipients of the 2005
Marie Whitaker Humanitarian Award |
In addition to adding four new people to the board, the
members of Media Fellowship House voted on certain changes to our current
By-Laws. Finally, the Media Fellowship House Board of Directors presented awards
to members of our community who have had a positive influence on our society.
Mr. Bill Gross and Mrs. Lorraine Gross were presented with the Marie Whitaker
Humanitarian Award for their long time service to our neighborhood. This award
is named in honor of Marie Whitaker, one of the founders of Media Fellowship
House and a woman of indomitable spirit whose quiet service to her community
serves as an inspiration to all who knew her. A second award, the Dorothy James
Community Service Award, will be presented to Mr. Dan Brodeur of Country House
Inn. Mr. Brodeur has been a good friend to non-profit organizations throughout
Delaware County for many years and his support of their various causes has been
a valuable asset to them as they work to achieve their respective missions. The
Dorothy James Community Service Award is named in honor of another founder of
Media Fellowship House and a woman whose commitment to fellowship provided the
foundation on which Media Fellowship House has grown over the last sixty years.
These individuals exemplify Media Fellowship House’s commitment to its neighbors
and we were honored to recognize them for their on-going contributions.
This year’s meeting was held at the Media Borough Community
Center at 6:30 PM. After the annual meeting, guests enjoyed a delicious Italian
dinner provided by the Fellini Café in Media. The dinner started at 7:00 PM. It
was a fun night for everyone and celebrated Media Fellowship House’s past as
well as the future.
